How we tested TorGuard from Thailand

TorGuard is built for a different crowd than most consumer VPNs: it leans toward power-users and P2P, runs 3,000+ servers across 50+ countries, and markets high-bandwidth/10Gbit servers. Because of that, we didn't just chase a single "fast or slow" number — we looked at how each protocol and each server location actually behaves when you fire them from a home line in Bangkok.

We held one fixed base connection throughout, then measured download, upload and ping for WireGuard and OpenVPN (UDP and TCP) to several server locations, repeating the runs during the day and late at night to factor out server load. Everything below is a hedged average — your own line speed, ISP routing and the time of day will move these figures around, so treat them as a realistic ballpark rather than a guarantee.

WireGuard ChaCha20 vs OpenVPN AES-256

The clearest speed difference on TorGuard comes down to the cipher. WireGuard uses ChaCha20, which is extremely light on the CPU, while OpenVPN and IKEv2 rely on AES-256 — heavier when there's no AES-NI hardware acceleration, such as on phones or older routers. In our testing, WireGuard held roughly ~65-78% of base download on Asian servers, OpenVPN UDP came in around ~45-60%, and OpenVPN TCP trailed everything because of the TCP-over-TCP penalty.

Why Asian servers beat US servers

TorGuard is a US company — VPNetworks LLC, headquartered in Orlando, Florida — and its largest server clusters plus all of its P2P-optimized servers live in the United States. That's excellent for torrenting and privacy, but it is a long way from Thailand: ping to US servers routinely climbs past 200ms, which makes web pages and games feel sluggish. For everyday browsing and streaming, Thai users get a much better experience on Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan servers, where ping typically sits in the ~15-60ms range and throughput holds up far better.

Stealth / ObsTCP and the speed they cost

One of TorGuard's real strengths is layered obfuscation for getting through restrictive firewalls: Stealth (based on Shadowsocks), ObsTCP (an OpenVPN XOR scramble) and OpenConnect on port 443. The trade-off is that every layer that disguises your traffic as ordinary HTTPS adds overhead. In our tests, enabling Stealth or ObsTCP dropped download to roughly ~50-65% of base. The practical advice is to run plain WireGuard as your default and only switch to obfuscation on networks — hotels, offices, campuses — that actively block VPN traffic.

Do TorGuard's 10Gbit / P2P servers help?

TorGuard markets a large number of high-bandwidth/10Gbit servers. The genuine benefit is less congestion on the server side when many people connect at once, so throughput holds up better at peak times. But it's important to be realistic: for a Thai user, the true ceiling is set by your home line and the ISP route from Thailand to the server, not the server's port speed. A 10Gbit server will not turn a 500Mbps connection into a gigabit one. Likewise, add-ons such as Dedicated IP, Residential IP and Streaming IP exist for stability and unblocking rather than raw download speed.

Tuning TorGuard for max speed from Thailand

The setup that consistently gave us the best results: make WireGuard your default protocol, connect to Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan instead of the US for everyday tasks, leave obfuscation switched off unless the network is actually blocking VPNs, and use a wired LAN connection over Wi-Fi whenever you can. Keep the US servers and port forwarding in reserve specifically for P2P and torrenting, where the P2P-optimized routing is exactly what you want.
