Hosting Renewal Guide Without Downtime
Renew your hosting correctly without losing your data
Contents
When should you renew hosting
Renew at least 30 days before expiry. Most hosts send reminders at 60/30/7 days but do not wait for the reminder email.
- Set a calendar reminder 60 days before expiry
- Do not wait for a late payment email
- Some hosts suspend sites immediately after expiry
- Grace periods are usually only 15–30 days
Auto-renew: should you enable it
Auto-renew prevents downtime from forgetting to pay, but ensure the payment method is not expired first.
- Enable auto-renew as a sensible default
- Update credit card before it expires
- Review invoices annually
- Cancel before auto-renewal if you no longer need the service
Always backup data before renewing hosting
Even on a normal renewal, always have a recent backup in case the host migrates servers or upgrades platform during the process.
- Download a full cPanel/DA backup before renewing
- Export the database too
- Store backups offsite, not just on the server
- Make monthly backups a habit
Consider migrating instead of renewing
If your site is slow, support is poor or price has risen sharply, renewal time is a great opportunity to switch hosts without double-paying.
- Compare new prices every year before renewing
- Migrate before expiry, not after
- Many new hosts offer free migration
- Watch out for lock-in periods from your current host
Domain and hosting renewal are separate, do not confuse them
Domain and hosting have separate expiry dates managed in different places. Renewing one does not renew the other.
- Domain: renew at your registrar
- Hosting: renew at your host
- Check expiry dates separately for each
- If the domain expires, the site goes down even if hosting is active
What is the grace period after hosting expires
Grace period is the window after expiry during which the host has not yet deleted your data — usually 15–30 days. The site is typically suspended during this time.
- Site goes offline but data is still intact
- Renewing during grace period brings the site back quickly
- After grace period data is permanently deleted
- Do not rely on grace period — always renew before expiry
Pre-renewal checklist
Run this checklist before every renewal to avoid problems.
- Latest backup downloaded
- Payment method is active
- Account email is receiving notifications
- Renewal price has not risen dramatically from promo
- Domain expiry date checked
Ways to save on hosting renewal costs

- Sign up for 2–3 years upfront for lower rates
- Wait for holiday promos such as New Year or Songkran
- Some hosts offer loyalty discounts for existing customers
- Upgrading the plan can sometimes be more cost-effective than straight renewal
