HostGator Email Hosting
HostGator includes Email Hosting in all Shared Hosting plans at no extra cost — create unlimited [email protected] accounts through cPanel Email Management.
Advantages of domain email over personal Gmail/Yahoo: more professional appearance ([email protected]), greater customer trust, full control over routing and policies, and no third-party platform restrictions.
Email Account cPanel
Create Email Account: cPanel → Email → Email Accounts → Create → select domain → enter username prefix → set strong password → set mailbox quota → click Create.
Recommended email accounts to create: info@ (general inquiries), contact@ (contact form), support@ (customer support), billing@ (invoices), noreply@ (automated system emails).

Visit HostGator →Webmail
Webmail options: Roundcube (clean, user-friendly — recommended), Horde (more features: calendar/contacts/tasks), SquirrelMail (classic, lightweight for slow connections). Access at yourdomain.com/webmail, mail.yourdomain.com, or yourdomain.com:2096. Login with full email address and password.
Email Client Setup
Email client settings: incoming IMAP port 993 (SSL), outgoing SMTP port 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS). Server: mail.yourdomain.com. Always use SSL/TLS, never plain connection. Username is the full email address.
IMAP vs POP3
IMAP (recommended): syncs across all devices, emails stay on server, deleting from one device doesn't delete from server. POP3: downloads email to device locally, often removes from server after download. Choose IMAP for multi-device use; POP3 only if single-device and want to save server storage.
SpamAssassin
SpamAssassin setup: cPanel → Email → Spam Filters → enable spam marking → set threshold (default 5, lower = stricter) → optionally auto-delete spam. Additional tools: Blocklist (block specific senders/domains), Allowlist (whitelist trusted senders), Boxtrapper (sender verification challenge).
Email Deliverability
SPF: specifies authorized mail servers for your domain. DKIM: adds digital signature to verify email origin. DMARC: policy for SPF/DKIM failures (reject/quarantine/none). Configure all at cPanel → Email → Email Deliverability — it shows status and offers a "Repair" button for unconfigured records.
Forwarders
Email Forwarding setup: cPanel → Email → Forwarders → Add Forwarder → enter source address → enter destination (e.g., Gmail). Note: forwarded email may occasionally land in Gmail spam because the sending IP changes during forwarding.
Gmail HostGator Email
Using Gmail with HostGator email: Method 1 (free) — set up forwarding to Gmail + configure Gmail's "Send As" using HostGator SMTP credentials. Method 2 — configure Gmail to check HostGator mailbox directly via POP3 (less reliable). Method 1 is generally more reliable and recommended.
Troubleshoot Email
Troubleshooting: can't send (check SMTP credentials/port/SSL), can't receive (check IMAP settings, spam folder, quota), email in spam (configure SPF/DKIM/DMARC), large attachments (HostGator generally limits 25-50MB), connection timeout (try port 587 instead of 465, check firewall).
