Domain Transfer Guide Thailand

Domain Transfer Guide Thailand

What is Domain Transfer

Domain Transfer means moving a domain name from the current registrar to a new one. When done correctly, it doesn't affect DNS settings or website availability. The process typically takes 5-7 days.

Migration: Registrar

Transfer registrars when: renewal price is higher than a new registrar, you need features the new registrar offers (better DNS), current support is poor, or you want domain and hosting at the same provider for easier management.

What is EPP Code

EPP Code (Authorization Code or Transfer Key) is a secret code confirming you're the domain owner and authorizing the transfer. Always request it from the current registrar first. This code is submitted to the new registrar during the transfer process.

Migration: Domain

Steps: 1. Unlock domain at current registrar 2. Request EPP code 3. Open account at new registrar 4. Initiate transfer with domain name and EPP code 5. Confirm via email 6. Wait for approval from current registrar 7. Transfer completes in 5-7 days.

DNS Transfer

Important: Domain Transfer ≠ DNS Transfer. Existing DNS settings remain at the original nameservers. To move DNS as well, do it separately. Recommended: configure DNS at the new registrar or Cloudflare before initiating the transfer.

Transfer

Domain transfers generally take 5-7 days per ICANN policy. The website continues working normally during this period. Some registrars allow faster approval completing in 1-2 days. .th/.co.th domains have different processes through THNIC.

What is Domain Lock

Domain Lock (Transfer Lock or Registrar Lock) prevents unintentional domain transfers, enabled by default to protect against domain hijacking. You must unlock it before transferring. Unlock through your domain management panel at the current registrar.

Migration: Domain

Key risks: domains registered or transferred within the past 60 days cannot be transferred. Expired domains may not transfer. Avoid renewing during transfer. Verify WHOIS email is correct (used for confirmation).

Migration: Domain

Domain transfer typically costs equal to a 1-year renewal, and the domain's expiration is automatically extended by 1 year. Some registrars may charge less than your current renewal price. Extensions like .co.th may have different costs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I transfer a domain without the website going down?
Yes. The website will not go down if the DNS still points to the same nameservers throughout the transfer. A domain transfer does not affect DNS that is active. Just be careful if you also want to change nameservers; doing it after the transfer is complete is safer.
Can a .co.th domain be transferred?
It can be transferred, but the process is different. .co.th is managed by THNIC and must go through THNIC's procedures. Contact a Thai registrar that supports .co.th, such as Ruk-Com or AsiaGB, to get the specific procedure details.
Will the domain lose its remaining time when transferred?
No. A domain transfer extends the term by 1 year from the original expiry date. So if 6 months are left + transfer = 18 months, not 6 months + 1 year from the transfer date.
What should I do if the EPP Code has expired?
You can always request a new EPP Code from the original registrar. Most codes expire in 24-72 hours. If it expires during the transfer process, request a new code and start the transfer again.
