Domain

Domain Renewal extends your right to hold a domain name for another year or more. Without renewal, the domain expires — the website stops, email stops working, and eventually the domain is released for others to register. Losing an important domain can be expensive and difficult to recover.

Auto-Renewal lets the registrar automatically renew the domain before expiry by charging the registered credit card. Recommended for all important domains. Make sure the credit card on file is valid and has sufficient funds.

.com: $10-15/year at most registrars (Namecheap, Cloudflare, Porkbun). .co.th: 500-700 THB/year. .th: 1,500-2,500 THB/year. .io: $40-60/year. .net/.org: similar to .com. Note: renewal prices are usually higher than promotional first-year registration prices.

What is Grace Period

Grace Period is 0-30 days after domain expiry during which the original owner can still renew at normal price. During Grace Period, the website and email stop working, but the domain is still owned by the original owner. Some registrars offer free grace period, others charge additional fees.

What is Redemption Period

Redemption Period is 30-60 days after Grace Period. ICANN requires registrars to provide 30-day Redemption. Restore fees are approximately $80-200 on top of normal renewal — very expensive. If not restored within 30 days, the domain enters Pending Delete.

When domain passes Redemption Period, it enters Pending Delete for 5 days then Drops = released for public registration. Backorder services like SnapNames, Pool.com help catch dropped domains immediately. There are fees but increases chances of getting the desired domain.

Can I renew a domain in advance, and how does it affect the expiry date?
Yes. An early renewal extends the expiry date by another year from the existing expiry date, not from the date you renew. For example, if a domain expires on 2025-12-31 and you renew this month, the new expiry will be 2026-12-31, not one year from today. You can renew in advance for up to 10 years at one time.
Do I also have to renew the domain when transferring registrars?
Normally, transferring a domain to a new registrar requires a 1-year renewal at the same time (Mandatory 1-Year Renewal), which means that if a domain was just renewed and still has 11 months left, the transfer will require paying for another year, but you also get a longer expiry date.
Once a domain expires, can someone register it immediately?
Not immediately. A domain must go through a Grace Period (30 days) -> Redemption Period (30 days) -> Pending Delete (5 days), about 65 days in total before it actually drops. People waiting to Backorder must wait for the drop first. Even though others cannot register it immediately, during this time your website and email do not work.
Is registering a domain for a long term good for SEO?
Google has not confirmed that Domain Age directly affects SEO, but a domain registered for a long time (e.g., 5 years) may be seen as more trustworthy than a domain registered for just one month. Registering for a long term mostly provides the benefit of convenience, no need to renew often, and reduces the risk of accidental expiry.
