Complete Installation & Features Guide

How We Reviewed CloudPanel

The CloudPicked team tested CloudPanel on a Hetzner CAX11 VPS (Debian 12, ARM64, 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM). We installed WordPress and a Node.js application, measuring install time, SSL configuration, and PHP version management. Feature data is sourced from cloudpanel.io (verified October 2026).

What is CloudPanel?

CloudPanel is a free, open-source server control panel for managing VPS and cloud servers, developed by MGT Commerce GmbH, a software company based in Germany. The latest stable release is v2.5.4 (July 2026), which added Node.js 24, MariaDB 12.3, and Ubuntu 26.04 support.

CloudPanel's philosophy is "obsessive focus on simplicity" — designed so developers, IT admins, and agencies can manage servers without memorizing complex Linux commands. The interface is clean, modern, and opinionated: it does a focused set of things extremely well.

Unlike cPanel or Plesk which require monthly licensing fees, CloudPanel is completely free and uses NGINX + PHP-FPM — a modern stack that delivers better performance per dollar compared to traditional Apache setups. It works seamlessly with all major cloud providers: AWS, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Google Cloud, Azure, Oracle Cloud Free Tier, and Vultr.

"CloudPanel lets you install WordPress on a VPS in under 5 minutes, with automatic SSL — no licensing fees, ever."

Important: CloudPanel must be installed on a fresh server. Do not install on a server that already has Apache, NGINX, MySQL, or any other web server installed — they will conflict.

Need a VPS to Run CloudPanel?

Hetzner CAX11 (ARM64, 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, ~€4.51/month) is one of the best value options for CloudPanel. For Thai-language managed hosting, AsiaGB.com offers DirectAdmin-based cloud hosting with 24/7 Thai support.

How to Install CloudPanel on Debian 12

Step 1: Prepare the Server

SSH into your fresh Debian 12 server and update the system:

apt update && apt upgrade -y

Step 2: Run the CloudPanel Installer

Run the official installer script (always verify the checksum at cloudpanel.io/docs before running):

curl -sS https://installer.cloudpanel.io/ce/v2/install.sh -o install.sh
echo "CHECKSUM install.sh" | sha256sum -c
bash install.sh

Installation takes approximately 5-10 minutes. The script automatically installs NGINX, PHP, MySQL/MariaDB, Redis, and the CloudPanel panel itself.

Step 3: Access the Admin Panel

After installation, open your browser and navigate to https://YOUR_SERVER_IP:8443 to create your first admin account.

Security tip: CloudPanel uses port 8443 for admin access. Restrict this port to your own IP address in your server's firewall rules immediately after setup.

Step 4: Add a Domain and Issue SSL

  1. Go to Sites → Add Site
  2. Enter your domain name and select your preferred PHP version
  3. Navigate to SSL/TLS → New Let's Encrypt Certificate
  4. CloudPanel requests the certificate and configures auto-renewal automatically

Installing WordPress with CloudPanel

WordPress installation is one of CloudPanel's standout features — the entire process takes under 2 minutes:

  1. In CloudPanel, go to Sites → Add Site → WordPress
  2. Fill in: Domain, Database name, Admin username, Admin password, Admin email
  3. Click Add Site — WordPress is ready in about 60 seconds

The installer automatically handles everything:

WordPress Performance on CloudPanel

Because CloudPanel uses NGINX + PHP-FPM instead of Apache + mod_php, WordPress performs significantly better than on traditional shared hosting. When you add Redis Object Cache (CloudPanel installs Redis automatically), you can serve thousands of concurrent visitors on a 2 GB RAM VPS.

"NGINX + PHP-FPM + Redis on CloudPanel handles high-traffic WordPress sites efficiently — outstanding cost-performance ratio."

CloudPanel vs CyberPanel

CyberPanel uses LiteSpeed, which is extremely fast for WordPress. However, the free LiteSpeed Community Edition has connection limits, and full features require a paid LiteSpeed Enterprise license. CloudPanel uses open-source NGINX with no restrictions and supports multiple application types beyond WordPress — making it more versatile for mixed workloads.

CloudPanel vs cPanel

cPanel has more features overall and is ideal for hosting providers needing WHM reseller functionality. However, cPanel's licensing costs have increased significantly in recent years. CloudPanel is free forever, making it ideal for developers and agencies who manage their own servers and don't need reseller features.

Pros & Cons of CloudPanel

Pros

Cons / Limitations

Verdict: Who Should Use CloudPanel?

Developers and agencies who want a free, high-performance VPS control panel without the overhead of cPanel/Plesk licensing. It's the best free control panel in 2026 for running WordPress, Node.js, or Python applications on cloud providers like Hetzner, DigitalOcean, or Oracle Cloud Free Tier. If you need reseller/WHM features or a built-in mail server, consider cPanel or HestiaCP instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
